An abysmal Power Play. some old friends and a hat-trick lead to another Crunch loss.
by DonETURN

The 1st period saw the Crunch come out fast and furious only to fizzle away late in the period. A slow first period with not much in the scoring and penalty departments. The only penalty of the period came at 10:47 on the Maple Leafs. The only goal came from former Crunch Josh Holden at 7:29 and assists went to Aaron Gavey and Dwayne Hay. The Crunch had a few scoring chances but couldn’t capitalize. The low point of the first period was the Power Play. The Leafs have the 27th ranked PK in the AHL, but the way the Crunch Power Play looked you’d think they were #1. Syracuse mustered not 1 shot on the PP in 2 minutes.

The Second period saw some more action in the penalty and scoring departments. Matt Davidson picked up a beautiful Short Handed goal as Leafs goalie Mikael Tellqvist handed it to him on a breakaway. Tellqvist came out to play the puck and Davidson took advantage of Mikaels poor puck handling ability. The 2nd saw St. Johns pick up 4 penalties and saw Syracuse capitalize on none of them. The Crunch PK looked good though picking up a SHG for  the 5th straight game. Scoring for St. Johns was #10 Aaron Gavey and was unassisted.

In the 3rd period things got a little nasty. Reich, Ettinger and Bicanek all picked up fighting majors at the end of the period. It also saw a 3rd period hat trick by the Leafs Brad Boyes scoring at 11:36 14:19 and app.. 19:45 in the empty net. The Crunch did manage to score on a goal by my personal choice for captain Andrej Nedorost with assists to Radim Bicanek and Derrick Walser, who also tied a team record for most shots in a game with 12.

In total the Crunch fall 5-2 thanks to the Hat Trick by Brad Boyes. A bad night for the PP going 1/6 on my calculations. A good night for the PK however picking up a SHG again their 14th of  the season. My 3 stars of the evening go to: 3RD: Trevor Ettinger. Nice to see someone stand up for their teammates. 2ND: Leafs Goalie Mikael Tellqvist with 41 saves and #1 star with the Hat Trick from the Leafs Brad Boyes. My Varada moron of the game award goes to Mikael Tellqvist for playing the puck with Davidson charging right for it and handing the Crunch a SHG. My thanks go out to him for the goal.
