NHL Exhibition Game
With the fog that had been
forming since early in the third getting thicker, the Columbus Blue Jackets
recorded their first win in three tries at the Onondaga County War Memorial,
5-3, over the Buffalo Sabres.
The Blue Jackets started fast and furious,
scoring three times in the first 4:56 of the game in support of starting goalie
Marc Denis. Andrej Nedorost finished a two-on-one break by putting a great feed
from Geoff Sanderson into the net behind Sabres goalie Mika Noronen just 28
seconds into the game. Sanderson added a power play goal at the 2:10 mark, with
assits to Nedorost and Andrew Cassels. Cassels made a deft pass off the right
wing boards to Nedorost to set up the goal. At the 4:56 mark, number one draft
choice overall Rick Nash showed his potential with a power play goal of his
own, assisted by Mike Sillinger and Rostislav Klesla. The game's lone scrap
came at the 11:31 mark, with Buffalo's Eric Boulton dropping the mitts with
former Crunch and current Blue Jackets fan favorite Jody Shelley. Both players
should signs of the early pre-season, losing their balance at times during the
bout. Both allowed the other to regain his footing, with the fight ending in a
draw. Both threw decent punches, but neither was a clear cut victor. The
Sabres got on the board at 18:45, with Ales Kotalik scoring, assisted by Tim
Connolly and Jochen Hecht. The period ended with the Blue Jackets up 3-1,
despite being out-shot 10-7.
Buffalo scored at the 4:57 mark of the second to
pull within one of the Blue Jackets, Derek Roy getting the goal assisted by Norm
Milley. Tim Jackman gave Columbus their two goal margin again at 6:55, assisted
by Radim Bicanek and Kiel McLeod. With Roy in the box serving a tripping
penalty, Nedorost notched his second of the game, with Nassh and Darrel Scoville
getting the helpers, at 10:05. Both teams opted to change goalies at this
point, with Denis (13 saves on 15 shots) getting replaced by Jean-Francois
Labbe, while Noronen (10 saves on 15 shots) was replaced by Tom Askey. A
questionable call late to Buffalo's Dimitri Kalinin gave the Blue Jackets a
"carry over" power play to finish the second, up 5-2. Askey was 3 of 3 in
shots, while Labbe stopped all eight he faced in the second.
The third period
saw the Sabres score just as the penalty to Kalinin ended, with Columbus
defenseman Aaron Johnson getting beat along the boards at his blueline, allowing
Hecht to score assisted by Doug Janik. The fog started forming on the ice at
the 7:30 mark, at times getting to be a nuisance for fans, players, and
officials alike. Columbus Defenseman Jamie Allison left the game at the 9:09
mark of the third, getting injured in a scrum while coming to Labbe's aid after
the Blue Jackets goalie had been knocked from his feet while in the crease.
Allison was helped off the ice by defensive partner Bicanek and the Blue
Jackets trainer. He did not return, and I do not know the extent of his injury.
Help from another fan would be nice on this one. Askey and Labbe made several
nice stops during the mid-point of the third, with neither net minder allowing
another goal. Late in the game, with the Blue Jackets on the power play, it
looked like Boulton and Shelley would have their second bout, but a tripping
penalty to Scott Lachance ended this threat. Although they were out-shot by a
margin of 33-28, the Blue Jackets left the home crowd happy with the 5-3 final
score.
Nash looked good, although he really needs to add a few pounds to his
frame. Definitely looking forward to watching him grow into a prime time
player.
McLeod is a big son of a gun, who will create a ton of problems for
opposing defensemen and goalies as he gets more experience.
Lachance, skating
with Klesla, was steady and professional.
Jackman, teamed with Shelley and
McLeod on the fourth line, looks to be another up and comer.
Cassels was
everything advertised. This guy can flat out play. Look for the Blue Jackets
winger to beg for ice time with him this season.
Johnson seemed a step
behind, and should be getting plenty of ice time in Syracuse or Elmira this
season.
Both Denis and Labbe were on, making big stops seem routine.
All
in all, a very exciting game, and it ain't October 4th yet?
