Pre-season game
The Crunch lost to Binghamton in the only Crunch home game of
the pre-season 5-4. The re-match is tomorrow night in Binghamton.
Some game notes:
Mike Pandolfo scored two goals and looked really sharp in all phases of
the game. Penalty killing and power play time are definitely in this
future, a welcome addition to both as well as even strength.
Karl Goehring played the nets, at times looking like the sole survivor
out there against the pesky Senators. A bit rusty, but with more
time to get used to the team in front of him will do fine.
Jonathan Schill played well, hopefully earning a regular shift this
year. I now it is early and what not, but hasn't this guy rode the
stands enough here in Syracuse?
Trevor Ettinger got beat by Brian McGrattan in the game's only bout, but
looked OK later when covering for others in the defensive zone. Even
directed traffic from time to time in his own end. Tough to move
in front and kept his stick on the ice, needs to work on puck handling
some more. Should make the club.
Trent Cull was everything advertised. Mean and nasty in front, a
solid leader for a youthful Crunch line-up. Nice replacement for
the retired Jeff Ware. Moved the puck smartly out of the zone.
Wore the "A" tonight with Brad Moran and Jeremy Reich.
Torrey DeRoberto was like a bumblebee out there, fast and veteran smart.
If he does not make the Crunch, will be the first recalled for
injury replacement.
Jody Robinson was quietly solid on defense. Made some excellent
hits at the blue line, especially in the second.
Moran got stronger as the game went on. Look for improvement
to last year's level as he gets wingers to play with regularly. Third
Crunch goal was a nice unassisted effort.
Reich as good old JR. Played with the intensity we have come to
"love" him for. Took more than a few face-offs and held his
own.
Matt Dzieduszycki (glad I only have to spell this one and not pronounce
it-Good Luck Bobby Mac) had the fourth Crunch goal. Played well,
as did most the team as the game went on.
Brad Wingfield seemed to be the "darling in referee Bob Langdon's
eye" throughout the game. Took three penalties, two of which
were questionable. Absolutely nailed Jeff Ulmer at the blue line
as Ulmer played the puck, and got called. Langdon usually lets the
players play, but seemed a bit one-sided on the calls tonight. I
know, it is pre-season for everyone.
A few players seemed out of timing, but this is due to the lack of
game-time with their teammates. With just tomorrow night's game
remaining in the pre-season, I certainly hope there is a lot of regular
practice with steady line mates, and not the shuffling around we have
seen in the past.
All in all, it was an OK game. I feel the early Crunch goal (27
seconds into the first) made the team believe it was going to be a cake
walk, and the Senators took full advantage. Give Binghamton
credit, they took control and scored five straight before the Crunch got
their second. To the Crunch's credit, they did not give up and
made it interesting with three late goals.
Just one fan's view of tonight's contest.
It ain't Saturday the 19th yet?
