Crunch Rewind

Goren's Two Goals Leads Rampage Over Crunch

 by Jeff Parzych

Lee Goren scored twice and added an assist and Brent Krahn stopped 27 Syracuse shots to lead the San Antonio Rampage to a 6-3 win over the Crunch in American Hockey League action Monday night.

Syracuse opened the scoring in this one 9:14 into period number one courtesy of a power play goal from Joe Motzko. He easily converted a gorgeous backdoor pass off the stick of Jeremy Reich for his 12th of the season and a 1-0 Crunch lead.

Just over two minutes later San Antonio answered the Crunch marker with a power play goal of its own. Left wing Josh Olsen corralled the rebound of a Kent Huskins shot form the point and neatly put the puck into the open side to tie the score at one apiece.

Just 29 seconds into the second period the Rampage took the lead for the first time off some hard work from left wing Greg Campbell. He batted home a loose puck in the Crunch crease after Karl Goehring failed to control a Lee Goren offering.

San Antonio increased their lead to 3-1 just prior to the midway point of period number two. Again Rampage captain Lee Goren would be right in the center of things, this time on the receiving end, as he one-timed a Brent Cullaton pass from behind the Crunch net past Karl Goehring for the goal.

Later in the second the Crunch cut San Antonio's lead in half on a goal from Donald MacLean. Zenith Komarniski ignited the play with some nice hustle to create the odd-man break. His shot after receiving a feed from Jeremy Reich was denied by Rampage netminder Brent Krahn, but Donald MacLean was there to put home the rebound for his 21st of the season.

San Antonio stretched the lead back to two early in the third period on another power play tally, this time off the stick of Lee Goren. The former North Dakota standout controlled a failed clearing attempt behind the Syracuse net and attempted a wrap-around on his former college teammate Karl Goehring. Goehring was up to the task on the first try, but could not stop Goren's second to give the Rampage a 4-2 lead.

Once again the Crunch would battle back and cut the deficit to one on a goal from left wing Shawn Limpright. He backhanded the rebound of a Derrick Walser blast from the point past Brent Krahn for his fourth of the year and new life for Syracuse.

Despite gaining some momentum from the Limpright tally, that was as close as the Crunch would get on this night. Nick Parillo's first of the season at the 13:13 mark of the third made it 5-3 Rampage and Denis Shvidki's empty net goal sealed the deal for San Antonio.

Karl Goehring finished the night with 20 saves for the Crunch as he falls to 11-9-4 on the season. The loss snaps the Crunch's season-long six-game winning streak.
