Crunch Rewind :

Crunch Lose to Amerks 4-2

by Jeff Parzych

Two goals in a span of 19 seconds erased a one goal Crunch cushion and propelled Rochester to a 4-2 win over Syracuse in American Hockey League action Saturday night.

Syracuse drew first blood in this one on a goal from center Jeff Panzer. Francois Beauchemin ignited the play by pinching in along the half boards to thwart an Amerk clearing attempt. His centering feed found the stick of Rochester defenseman Jeff Jillson, but he couldn't control the pass and the opportunistic Panzer corralled the loose puck and slipped a backhand past Miller for an early Crunch advantage.

Rochester answered late in the first with a power play goal from their captain, Chris Taylor. Matthias Trattnig's delay of game penalty set up the four on three advantage and Taylor capitalized by batting home the rebound of a Jason Pominville offering to tie the game at one.

The Crunch regained the lead early in the second on a goal from Brad Moran. Moran won a race to a loose puck in the Rochester crease for his second of the season and a 2-1 game. Tim Jackman and Mike Pandolfo recorded assists on the play.

Rochester quickly turned things around in the third with back-to-back tallies from Derek Roy and Jason Pominville. The goals, scored 19 seconds apart, erased Syracuse's one goal advantage and gave the Amerks the lead with just under twelve minutes left in regulation.

Thomas Vanek added some insurance late in the period, sealing the deal for Rochester. Ryan Miller finished the evening with 38 saves for his sixth win of the season. Karl Goehring turned aside 36 shots as he falls to 0-4 on the season.

Short Shifts:

The Crunch may have some help on the way in the form of Joakim Lindstrom. Columbus's second round selection from 2002 is currently playing for Modo in Sweden, but Friday's Columbus Dispatch reported that Lindstrom's agent is negotiating with the club to bring his game over to North America to finish the year in Syracuse. Since the arrival of Peter Forsberg and the Sedin twins to Modo due to the NHL lockout, Lindstrom's ice time has been severely limited. So far this season the young center has appeared in 15 games for Modo, recording 1 goal and 14 penalty minutes………After Saturday's 0-8, the Crunch are now a depressing 5-75 with the man-advantage this season…….Crunch winger Tim Jackman turns 23 on Sunday……..Two of the three goals scored by Jeff Panzer this season have been scored when Panzer has lost his helmet.

 On Deck:

The Crunch head south to pay a visit to the Broome County Arena for a late afternoon tussle with the Binghamton Senators. On Saturday the B-Sens fell to the Philadelphia Phantoms 3-2 on home ice. Brandon Bochenski and Pat Kavanagh tallied for Binghamton in the loss. Game time is set for 5:00 P.M.
