Crunch Preseason Rewind :

Crunch Hammer Sens 9-1
 by Jeff Parzych

Syracuse scored six goals via their special teams and added three more even strength to pound the Binghamton Senators 9-1 in their preseason opener Sunday evening.

The Crunch broke the seal on this one just past the nine minute mark of the opening period with a power play marker from Tim Jackman. With the Crunch holding a 4 on 3 advantage Jackman lifted a wrister over the shoulder of Senator netminder Jeff Glass for an 1-0 Syracuse lead.

Binghamton evened things up with a power play goal of their own at the 15:52 mark of the first. Grant Potulny, parked to the left of Andrew Penner, pounded home the rebound of a Beau Geisler offering to make it a 1-1 game.

Things didn't remain tied for long as the Crunch exploded for two goals, both of the shorthanded variety, in a span of 35 seconds to take a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes. Rookie Kyle Musselman kicked things off by pick-pocketing a Senator defenseman, breaking in alone on Glass and slipping a nifty backhand past the prone netminder.

Raffaele Sannitz followed up Musselman's tally with his second point of the period. Sannitz's shot rang of the far post and lay untouched in the crease before deflecting off a Binghamton defender and finding its way into the back of the net.

Syracuse added three more tallies, all on the power play, in the second to extend their lead to 6-1. Brett Nowak got things rolling when he flipped a wrist shot from the left-wing face-off circle past Glass.

Brian Gornick followed up Nowak's marker with maybe the prettiest goal of the evening. Gornick fired a laser that beat Glass high to the blocker side and found the top corner of the net, dislodging the water bottle in the process.

Tim Jackman's second of the night closed out the scoring in the period. Jackman crashed the net pounding home the rebound of Tyson Teplitsky's drive from the point.

The Crunch wasted little time piling it on in the third as Geoff Platt notched his first of the night just 27 seconds into the period. Platt converted a nice two-on-one with Jeff Szwez for the score.

Later in the period Szwez scored a goal of his own on a great individual effort play. The hulking Szwez displayed some soft hands, outdueling a Senator defender before slipping one past Glass for the score.

Brian Gornick closed out the scoring with his second of the night at the 16:03 mark of the third. Gornick's shot just squeezed thru Glass' pads and found its way into the net.

Crunch One-Timers:

Jason Payne did his part in Sunday's tilt, tangling with Senator tough guy Brett Clouthier the first time they took a shift together. They lined up together for the face-off and at Payne's request went as soon as the puck was dropped. Both player's landed some nice blows and what turned out to be an very entertaining bout that ended in a draw………Brian Gornick and Tyler Kolarik also dropped then in the game with Kolarik doing surprising well against Binghamton defenseman Neil Petruic……….Andrew Penner looked sharp in his first action of the season stopping 14 of 15 shots. Number two right now in camp Kevin Couture also faired nicely in his Crunch and AHL debut.

Pre-game Skate:

Scratched for the Crunch was Philippe Dupuis (concussion). Binghamton had no scratches.
