Crunch Preseason Rewind :

Crunch Top Sens 4-3 in Overtime
 by Jeff Parzych

Greg Mauldin scored twice and rookie forward Geoff Platt added a goal and two assists to lead the Syracuse Crunch to a 4-3 come from behind win over the Binghamton Senators Monday evening.

Syracuse opened the scoring in this one at the 12:41 mark of the opening period on a goal from Greg Mauldin. The second year forward corralled a bad angle shot off the stick of defenseman Tyson Teplitsky and beat Senator netminder Billy Thompson from close range for a 1-0 Crunch lead.

The Senators tied things up just over two minutes later on a goal from defenseman Neil Petruic. His slapper from the high slot beat Syracuse goaltender Andrew Penner stick side to make it a 1-1 game heading into the middle twenty.

Just past the midway point of the second Binghamton took their first lead of the night courtesy of a breakaway goal from forward Jeff Heerema. Heerema’s first offering found the post but he was able to put home his own rebound to make it 2-1 Sens.

Later in the period the Crunch evened things up on a goal from Geoff Platt. The rookie continues to shine, notching his third goal of the preseason, this one off a slap shot from the left wing face-off circle to make it a 2-2 game.

In the third the Senators recaptured the lead on a power play goal from Grant Potulny. Former Crunch blueliner Jonathon Zion fired a shot on net that Potulny knocked down, controlled and slipped the puck past Penner to make it 3-2 Sens.

That score remained until the 19:57 mark of the period when Greg Mauldin notched his second of the night to send the game into overtime. Defenseman Jeff MacMillan did an excellent job of keeping the play alive and his centering feed found Geoff Platt in front of the Binghamton net. Platt then slipped a nifty pass to a cutting Mauldin and he buried the shot for the score.

The Crunch completed the comeback 2:33 into the extra session on a goal from blueliner Andy Canzanello. With the Crunch holding a 4 on 3 advantage, Canzanello’s drive was deflected on the way in before bounding over a prone Thompson for the score.

Crunch One-Timers:

The latest round of cuts from Blue Jacket camp were made on Monday. Mark Hartigan, Joe Motzko, Aaron Johnson, Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Brandon Sugden were all sent to the Crunch. Both Hartigan and Sugden are subject to waivers and teams have 24 hours to put in a claim for either player. Columbus now stands at 25 players and will need to get down to 23 prior to opening night on Wednesday. Final cuts for the Crunch should also happen in the next few days…………Trevor Hendrikx continues to be a physical presence in attempting to make the Syracuse roster. On Monday he laid out Mac Faulkner with a gorgeous hip check and also caught center Charlie Stephens later in the contest………..Rookie Geoff Platt has also made a strong case to remain with the Crunch. He recorded three more points on Monday and finished the preseason as Syracuse’s top scorer with 3 goals and 5 assists in four games. It would be very difficult not to keep Platt now, especially when it seems his style of play is tailor-made for the new rules in the league……..Sure looked like Greg Mauldin got a piece of the winning goal in overtime, but the AHL officials saw otherwise.

Pre-game Skate:

Scratched for the Crunch was defenseman Tyler Scott, right wing Kyle Musselman and center Philippe Dupuis. Binghamton sat defenseman Neil Komadoski along with centers Joe Cullen and Jonathan Lehun.

On Deck:

Syracuse opens the regular season at home on Saturday evening when the Albany River Rats come to town. Game time is set for 7:30 P.M.
