Crunch Preseason Rewind :

Penguins Down Crunch 5-1
by Jeff Parzych

Dany Sabourin turned aside 30 Syracuse shots and Michal Sersen added a goal and two assists to lead the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 5-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch in preseason AHL action Tuesday night.

Wilkes-Barre opened the scoring in this one just under two minutes into the opening period on a power play marker from forward Daniel Carcillo. With the Penguins holding a 5-on-3 advantage, Carcillo converted a nifty cross-crease pass from Stephen Dixon to give Wilkes-Barre the early lead.

Syracuse answered less than four minutes later with a power play goal of their own. With Tyler Kolarik causing havoc in the crease, rookie defenseman Andrew Canzanello’s shot from the point beat Penguin netminder Dany Sabourin low to the glove side to even things at one.

Wilkes-Barre regained the lead late in the period on a pretty goal from forward Kurtis McLean. Syracuse goaltender Andrew Penner was up to the task on the first shot from Drew Fata, but couldn’t deny McLean, who batted the rebound out of midair past Penner to give the Pens a 2-1 lead heading into the middle twenty.

The Penguins extended their lead early in the second a goal from Bo Cheesman. His slap shot, off a pass from Konrad McKay, beat Penner high glove side to give the Pens a two goal advantage.

Later in the period Wilkes-Barre made it a 4-1 game on a goal from defenseman Paul Bissonnette. His drive from the left point deflected off the skate of Crunch blueliner Tyler Scott and past Penner for the score.

The Penguins closed out the scoring in the third with their third power play goal of the night and their second while holding a two-man advantage. Michal Sersen’s drive, off a pass from Paul Bissonnette, found the top corner of the net for a final score of 5-1.

Crunch One-Timers:

Enforcer Jason Payne continues to impress for the Crunch. The veteran pugilist hasn’t lit the world on fire, but he continues to do exactly what he needs to do game in and game out. In both preseason contests Payne has made his presence known early and he has more than held his own against two decent veteran fighters that have a combined 10 inches and 47 pounds on him…………Tyler Kolarik has also stood out so far in the preseason. Not only does he lead the Crunch with three majors, but more impressive is the way he has been taking the body on a regular basis and also his motor that never seems to stop………..Injured center Philippe Dupuis, who is recovering from a concussion suffered in his last practice with the Jackets, is scheduled to ride the bike on Wednesday and return to practice on Thursday………..Plenty of familiar faces are currently in camp with the Manitoba Moose. Former Crunch players Shawn Limpright, Jeff Panzer, Prestin Ryan and Yuri Moscevsky are all in attendance along with former Rochester American blueliner Ryan Jorde.

Pre-game Skate:

Scratched for the Crunch were center Philippe Dupuis (concussion) and defenseman Jeff MacMillan. Wilkes-Barre had no scratches.

On Deck:

The Crunch plays game two of a home and home with the Pens Wednesday evening at Wachovia Arena. Game time is set for 7:05 P.M. The Crunch then round out their preseason slate and the ‘I-81 Puck Cup Tournament’ on Monday, October 3rd when the Binghamton Senators pay a visit to the War Memorial. Game time for that game is 7:00 P.M.
