The Crunch defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs by a score of 4 to 2, backstopped by a 34 save performance by goalie Karl Goehring.  The Crunch pre-season record now stands at 3-1, with one game remaining tomorrow afternoon at home against the Moose.
Left Wing Jonathan Schill opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the game with a beautiful effort, beating Bulldog goalie Eric Heffler for the unassisted goal.  RW David Oliver looked to put the Crunch up 2-0 at the 6:12 mark, but the goal was waved off after the referee had lost sight of the still loose puck to the left of the Hamilton goal.  The period ended with the Crunch leading 1-0, as well as out-shooting the Bulldogs 11-10.
In the second, Crunch C Andrej Nedorost gave the team a 2-0 lead at the 1:35 mark with RW Kent McDonell getting the lone helper.  The first scrap of the game occurred at the 4:58 mark, with Crunch RW Shawn Legault and Hamilton LW Adam Dewan battling to a draw.  Legault suffered a small cut near his left eye, which appeared to come more from an accidental head knock than a punch.  RW Cory Morgan then teamed with Crunch Captain RW Matt Davidson to net a short-handed goal, giving the Crunch a 3-0 lead.  At the 11:40 mark, Hamilton replaced Heffler with goaltender Ty Conklin.  The Crunch held a 19-18 shot advantage at this point.  Goehring made a super save with the shaft of his stick at the 13:20 mark, followed just 32 seconds later by the fourth Crunch goal, Duvie Westcott getting the goal with a nicely placed point shot.  Assists went to Oliver and Preston Mizzi.  At 15:01, Crunch D Tim O'Connell and Hamilton LW Jareed Smith picked up double minors for roughing as a result of a short bout in front of the Crunch bench.   O'Connell won the brief scrap.  Hamilton got on the board at the 17:13 mark, with D Marc-Andre Bergeron closing out a 2-on-1 break after the Crunch point man missed a check in the offensive zone.  Greg Leeb and Michael Henrich got the helpers.  The whistle saw the Bulldogs now leading in shots 23-22, but behind 4-1 on the scoreboard.
Early in the third, the Crunch were running around at times in their own end of the ice, but Goehring stood strong in net.  Legault scored a decision over Bulldog D Alex Henry at the 14:07 mark of the period, with Henry getting the early shower by not having his jersey tied down.  Hamilton closed out the scoring at the 17:08 mark, with nice passing in the Crunch zone leading to a goal by C Geoff Peters.  Sean McAslan and Chris Hajt got assists on the goal.  The game ended with the Crunch ahead 4-2, but being out-shot 36-24.
Before the game, the Crunch sent LW Trevor Ettinger and D Mike Vellinga to Dayton of the ECHL.  Crunch regulars from last season who did not dress included G J.F. Labbe, LW Jeremy Reich, C Blake Bellefeuille, D Jeff Ware, and LW Mathieu Darche.
In pre-season action so far, Westcott and McDonnell lead the team in points with four each, Westcott scoring two goals and two assists while McDonnell has three helper to go with one goal.  Mizzi has three helper as well.  Brad Wingfield also has two goals, as well as leading the team with 81PIMs.  Legault leads the team with eight fighting majors, one ahead of Wingfield's seven.  With the departure of Ettinger (62PIMs), Legault now ranks second with 54PIMs.
Next up is tomorrow's final pre-season game, as the Crunch host the Manitoba Moose.  Several former Crunch players are on the Moose roster, as the Moose are now the top affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.  Remember, this and all Sunday home games start at 5PM this season, to encourage families to come out and spend an afternoon together with the Crunch.
