The Crunch hosted the Manitoba Moose in the pre-season finale last night and emerged with a 4-3 victory.  Goaltender J. F. Labbe faced 40 shots in a game reminiscent of last year's defense, when the Crunch allowed 38.1 shots against per game.  With less than 1,000 fans in the stands, the Syracuse team ended the pre-season with four straight wins after dropping their first game.
The Moose scored first, with C Andre Savage getting them on the board at the 2:47 mark.  Former Amerk nemesis Jason Cipolla and RW Pat Kavanaugh assisted on the play.  Kent McDonell and Shawn Legault both hit posts in the first period, but Manitoba goalie Alfie Michaud held the Crunch at bay, stopping all 9 shots he faced.  At the buzzer, Crunch LW Jeremy Reich and Moose RW Jimmy Roy engaged in the game's first bout, with Reich scoring early and often with a series of lefts.
The game's other bout occurred at the 5:18 mark of the second, with Syracuse LW Brad Wingfield and Manitoba LW Garrett Burnett going at it.  Wingfield tried for an early takedown, which was blocked by Burnett.  As the players wrestled to the ice, Wingfield caught Burnett with a solid right for the only clean blow of the fight.  Legault put the Crunch on the board with his second of the pre-season at the 9:29 mark, assisted by D Derrick Walser.  McDonell scored his second of the pre-season unassisted at the 10:57 mark after a great effort in the offensive zone.  C Artem Chubarov scored an awesome goal for the Moose at the 15:03 mark, assisted by Roy and D Brent Sopel.  Chubarov made a great move at the blueline, the cleanly beat Labbe with his shot.  The period ended tied at 2, with the Moose holding a 30-20 shot advantage.
At :23 of the third, Manitoba D Ryan Vydarney was caught for a 5-minute high stick major as a result of a hit on Crunch C Blake Bellefeuille.  During the power play, Reich scored with assists from McDonell and Walser.  Sopel then ran Bellefeuille into the boards near the Moose bench, bringing the wrath of Legault who came to his smaller teammate's aid.  Sopel refused all invitations from several Crunch players for the remainder of the game.  At 14:46, a large scrum behind the Moose net resulted in a two minute minor to Reich for roughing while D Ryan Bonni picked up two for charging and a ten-minute misconduct.  Walser scored short-handed at the 15:55 mark with a beautiful shot from the left face-off circle, assisted by Bellefeuille.  Roy made the game interesting at the 18:05 mark, assisted by Chubarov and D Brian Chapman.  Labbe stood strong in goal after that, getting the win in his first appearance for the Crunch in this camp.  The Moose ended with a 40-29 shot advantage.  Former Crunch players Michaud, Sopel, Bonni, D Darrell Hay, Chubarov, LW Ryan Ready, Kavanagh, and Burnett were in uniform for the Moose.  Former fan favorite LW Mike Brown missed the game after suffering a concussion the night before in Rochester.
McDonell led the Crunch in scoring, with two goals and four assists.  D Duvie Westcott was second with three goals and one helper.  Wingfield led the team in PIMs with 86 while tying Legault for the team lead with eight fighting majors.  Goalie Karl Goehring posted a 2-0 record (2.00GAA), Greg Gardner was 1-1 (3.50GAA) while Labbe was 1-0 with a 3.00GAA.
The Crunch open the regular season at home this Saturday vs. the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
